His Holiness the 18th Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche was born in perfect form on 15 October 1982 to a Tibetan family in Dalhousie, India. He is the reincarnation of the previous His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso who was undeniably one of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist masters of our time, taking birth at the turn of the 20th Century and passing away in 1981.

Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang was, for his generation, the repository of the Gaden Oral Tradition originating with the 2nd Buddha — the great Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa. Up to the end of his life, the illustrious Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang compassionately and continuously turned the Wheel of Dharma for the sake of all sentient beings.

The main assistant of Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang, Kungo Palden, was primarily responsible for the search for the new incarnation. He consulted Dharmapala Dorje Shugden, who recognised Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche as the unmistaken incarnation of Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang. Such sentiment was also shared by many other high Gelugpa lineage lamas, including the late Kyabje Lati Rinpoche and His Holiness the 98th Gaden Tripa Jampel Shenpen. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama officially recognised Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche as the reincarnation of his predecessor on 23 April 1985.

Following his recognition, Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche completed his primary studies under the compassionate tutelage of his gurus Kyabje Lati Rinpoche and Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche in Gaden Shartse Monastery.

When he was 13 years old, Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche left India for Europe. He lived in Tashi Rabten Monastery for a time under the guidance of His Eminence Gonsar Rinpoche. In 2004, Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche migrated to the United States and settled down at Trijang Buddhist Institute in Northfield, Vermont where he serves as the Spiritual Director.

Trijang Buddhist Institute was officially dedicated to Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche on 18 September 2004. Interestingly, it was originally established by a devoted student of His Eminence Domo Geshe Rinpoche, Rea Barkley. She had begun renovating the pre-existing buildings with the intention of offering everything to her Lama, who instead instructed her to offer it to Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche.

On 23 April 2009, His Holiness the 101st Gaden Tripa Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal announced his support for Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche’s position as the Spiritual Director of Trijang Buddhist Institute.

Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche’s foremost desire is to continue the legacy of his revered predecessor, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang. His goal is to continue to spread the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism for the happiness of all sentient beings.

Given the significant role and position held by the previous His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso in the Tibetan Buddhism sphere, the story about Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche touches me on several levels. For one, it is the good fortune of sentient beings to have the fourth incarnation in the line of Trijang Rinpoches carry on the turning the Wheel of Dharma. The first was the 69th Gaden Tripa and the second was the 85th Gaden Tripa.

In the book Gurus for Hire and Enlightenment for Sale, His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche spoke about the late His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang Rinpoche; it was mentioned that all erudite masters of Rinpoche’s time were students to His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang Rinpoche. This goes to show that the depth of his influence and undeniably one of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist masters of the time.

Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche was recognized as the unmistaken incarnation of Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang by Dorje Shugden as well as other high Gelugpa lineage lamas. He was officially recognized on 23 April 1985 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, the previous incarnation of His Holiness the 18th Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche had preserved and given us the precious lineage teachings and practises. He had carefully recorded his Guru, His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche’s famous 24 days oral teachings of the Lamrim and published “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand” which is widely used today. His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang was the Junior Tutor to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and had enlisted the help of Protector Dorje Shugden to ensure the safe passage of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to India. His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang had also been the Guru of many eminent incarnate Lamas and Teachers, including His Holiness Zong Rinpoche, Lama Loden Sherab Dagyab, Dagpo Lama Jampa Gyatso, Denma Locho Rinpoche, Gelek Rinpoche, Geshe Rabten and Lama Yeshe. With such an illustrious and faultless life, we are indeed most fortunate to have the merits of his reincarnation.

His Holiness the 18th Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche, the current holy incarnation was officially recognised by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on 23 April 1985 with confirmations from Protector Dorje Shugden and many high Gelugpa lineage lamas, including the late Kyabje Lati Rinpoche and His Holiness the 98th Gaden Tripa Jampel Shenpen.

It is so gratifying to see how highly attained Lamas work together when His Eminence Domo Geshe Rinpoche requested his devoted student, Rea Barkley to offer the renovated pre-existing buildings in Northfield, Vermont, USA to Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche instead of himself. The place was then named Trijang Buddhist Institute and was officially dedicated to Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche on 18 September 2004. As the Spiritual Director, Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche continues the works of his predecessor and blessed the people with his turning of the Wheel of Dharma. He had travelled to many countries and places to bless, to teach and to confer initiations. May Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche be blessed with very long healthy life and may he continue to spread the teachings of Je Tsongkapa to all corners of the world. May we at Kechara Forest Retreat be ready to receive his auspicious visit to our Guru, His Eminence the 25th Tsem Tulku Rinpoche in the near future.
