Did Namka Bardzin only appear less than 100 years?

Yes, Namkar Barzin’s story began in the 1920s, so we are approaching the 100-year anniversary of Namkar Barzin pretty *soon*. Check out this link about Namkar Barzin and how he arose: http://www.dorjeshugden.org/blog/namkar-barzin

Namka Barzin is a protector by his own right. There is no right or wrong, and reciting his prayers would definitely invoke the blessings of his promise to aid sincere practitioners. However, his function as a Dharma Protector is mainly focused on protecting monasteries and dharma institutes.

In my opinion, if you are seeking help with in regards to work, Dorje Shugden’s practice may be more suitable. Do note that Namka Barzin is part of Dorje Shugden’s entourage, he functions as one of Dorje Shugden’s ministers along side Kache Marpo. So when you pray to Dorje Shugden, you’re automatically praying to Namka Barzin as well. Hope this help, good luck in your practice!

So is this means if I pray to Dorjee Shugden then Namkar Barzin will also help me? Then how come I don’t just pray to Buddha and all of them also will help me?

Take for example, if you’re friends with the Prime Minister, all his smaller ministers will help and be friendly with you too. So it is similar to this concept.

Then how come I don’t just pray to Buddha and all of them also will help me?

In regards to this question, this is the difference between the Buddhas and Dharma Protectors. They both have different functions. Take for example, even the Buddhas have many different emanations and functions. Medicine Buddha is very good for healing, Dukkar is good for protection from spirits, White Tara is good for long life etc. This is because each Buddha when they arise they have certain aspirations to help people of that particular affliction. It doesn’t mean that if we pray to Medicine Buddha, all we get is healing, but the main focus is healing, and along with it comes other blessings and the path to our eventual enlightenment.

The Buddha’s main wish is for us to reach enlightenment. But because we live in a world that’s full of distractions, that’s where the Dharma Protectors come along to help us. Dharma Protectors like Dorje Shugden is able to help us in most regards of our lives, for example, creating a good condition and environment for us so that we will have lesser distractions to practice the Dharma. So you will see many people will tell you for example, they managed to get a stable job, or their families don’t cause too much trouble anymore, or they found a Dharma centre; all after praying to Dorje Shugden. So when we pray to Dorje Shugden and create the connection, he helps us to create a good environment of which we will then be able to practice with more ease and garner merits to support our actual Dharma practice.

His help also comes swiftly, not because the Buddhas is inferior to Dorje Shugden, but simply because he is ‘closer’ with us. Tsem Rinpoche likes to use this example: If you live in Singapore, and you need help from a friend. One of your friend lives in Singapore and the other in Penang… of course the one living in Singapore will reach to you faster. At the moment, because of our lack of merits, the Buddhas are spiritually distant from us. Even if Shakyamuni was screaming infront of our face, we can’t see it due to our negative karma and obscurations. But for Dharma Protector such as Dorje Shugden, we can see him, such as when he takes trance in an Oracle, he can bless us and guide us, even give us Dharma teachings through his minister Kache Marpo.

As a conclusion to the above, Yidam practice (which is prayers towards the Buddhas such as Manjushri, Lama Tsongkhapa etc) is our main practice because enlightenment is the ultimate goal. But having a Dharma Protector is equally important as he helps support us to create the right conditions NOW so that we can engage deeper in Dharma practice.

Namkar Barzin is perhaps more suited to helping you at home in terms of keeping material possessions safe from theft and robbery. It is not uncommon to see images of Namkar Barzin placed over the front door of homes to ward against robbers and those with ill intent. For instance, this small votive image (tsa tsa) of Namkar Barzin or others like it would be suitable.

If you’re looking for help at work, what kind of assistance in particular do you need?

I have a colleague who is always trying to get me in trouble. When we are doing team projects, they don’t pull their weight and it shows when we’re doing client presentations. The boss is holding me responsible for their non-performance but I’m not their supervisor! It’s not my fault! Namkar Barzin looks like he would be able to sort out my colleague’s behaviour pretty quickly??

I don’t think Namkar Barzin or Dharma Protector will “take care” and “sort out” your colleague’s behaviour. LOL. My view of praying to Dharma Protector is as such: we are not praying the Dharma Protector to take away our problems, but pray to give us the strength, patience and wisdom to handle the situation. Buddha is not a “quick fix” to our problems. In your case, may be you will need to pray to have more compassion towards your colleague. Also, when learning to deal with such difficult colleagues, you will learn additional skill sets which may be useful in future. May be you have taken advantage of your colleagues or other people in previous lives, and now the karma comes back.

I strongly believe Dharma Protector will help lessen the severity of the issue, but in the end, it is us who needs to handle our own karma.

Namkar Barzin was a Mongolian Geshe who suffered a traumatic death and, in the period immediately after his death, was taunted by a group of kids. Anger arose in him at this humiliation, leading to his rebirth as an angry spirit who terrorised the local community. He was later subdued by the great Domo Geshe Rinpoche and installed in the entourage of Dorje Shugden to serve this enlightened Dharma Protector and accumulate merits by assisting others.

It just goes to show the thoughts we habituate ourselves into during our lifetime are extremely important at time of our death. These thoughts create imprints in our mindstream that come to fruition at the moment of our death, to help determine if we take a positive or negative rebirth.

      Dear Leean,

Like what Lew has said, I do not think that through practising Namkar Bardzin practices it will help you to “sort out” your colleague’s behaviour. I will say that through the practice it will give you more strength to push on and carry on with what is going on. The practice might even give you ways to help you deal with what is happening. It can help you in this manner.

The main reason being that everything arises from our minds. When we are able to change our thoughts towards a group of people that we might find them difficult to work with, we will be able to find the way to work with them. If we are able to win this battle from within, we will be able to achieve so much more in our lives.

I would just like to know that since Namkar Bardzin is actually the incarnation of a Geshe, is he fully enlightened? If he is not, why is it possible for us to be praying to him?

I thought it is advisable to only pray to enlightened beings? If so, why are we praying to all the entourage of Dorje Shudgen when some of them are not enlightened at all? If we do this, is it against our refuge vows?
